Description
The Altos Tahona Society, born in Mexico and now a global organisation for bartenders, focuses on product education, career advancement, bartender welfare, and sustainable bar practices. 2018 saw the launch of their new global competition, The Collective Spirit project with the SA leg held at The Living Room in Maboneng. Open to bartenders around the world, the competition urges participants to devise a sustainable bar practice project or business that benefits the community and the industry, offering a grand prize of over five hundred thousand rands to fund the project. One of the finalists chosen to attend the final project presentations in Mexico were an award-winning bar tending couple from South Africa. Their amazing idea, the Ubuntu project aims to improve their immediate community with a sustainable greenhouse farm and recycling operation that they hope to one day expand to all over South Africa.
